The 2nd annual student conference on American Studies dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act
The 2nd annual student conference on American Studies dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act traditionally was held by American Studies Students Scientific Group, the Institute of American Studies and Georgian Association for American Studies at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on April 26, 2014. The idea for the conference was implemented by Mariam Khatiashvili, chairperson of American Studies Students Scientific Group.
Cultural Affairs Officer from the U.S. Embassy Tbilisi welcomed conference participants and invited guests: “This day is important to us, because after 50 years from its adoption this act came in reality. Today our president is African-American, president Barack Obama is the result of the successful implementation of this Act. I am glad that here in Georgia is this department where American Studies is taught.”
Elene Medzmariashvili, scientific head of the American studies students’ scientific group and professor at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University embraced students’ interests and engagement in American Studies scientific field: “You step in American Studies scientific field for the first time and I would like to wish you success in this way.” She also said that topics were more interesting in comparison with the last year’s conference [The 1st Annual Student Conference on American Studies “Two Americas: Past, Present, Future”]. Moreover she was hopeful that this process would last long and that students would present even more interesting issues.
During his opening speech, Vasil Kacharava, director of Georgian Association for American Studies, head of the Institute of American Studies and professor at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, highlighted that the United States of America mainly is Business. “The Business of America is Business”, he announced.
The keynote speaker Jeffrey T. Renz, Fulbright scholar in Georgia, clinical professor of Law, University of Montana gave a presentation on the topic “50 Years of Civil Rights and What Have We Achieved?”.
“Applications were selected by the organizational committee for the several criteria: how well were they in compliance with the scientific standards and how well had students represented the research elements in their chosen reports”, said Mariam Khatiashvili, chairperson of American Studies Scientific Group. She also talked about the key role of the volunteer students Nino Jorbenadze, Salome Tsikarishvili, Khatia Kapanadze, Lika Gelashvili, Nina Babalashvili, Nino Donadze, Tamuna Shvelidze who contributed to the conference technical supports.
Students presented their reports in two conference sections: The History, Politics and Economy of the U.S. and Latin America (chairperson: Vasil Kacharava) and Cultural and Social Affairs of the U.S. (chairperson: Elene Medzmariashvili).

The conference was remarkable because it was fulfilled by the American music event at the Ivane Javakhsivhili Tbilisi State University main concert hall. Student singers Guga Macharashvili, Nona Saatashvili, Nana Kapanadze, Natia Eloshvili, Tinuka Kandelaki, Ani Chikhradze and Giorgi Tsertsvadze sang songs from various American musical genres.
All participants were awarded by the participation certificates, American books donated by the American Centre of Information Resources at the U.S. Embassy Tbilisi and several issues of Tbilisi State University scientific journal “TSU Science”.
